"Pass through the school, and let the school pass through you." These were the words that started me off on a long, really long journey in my writing career. You see, I've been writing before, since I picked up a notebook as a little girl and scrawled, "Adanna the stubborn girl." Time flew by and I was already writing factious history on African colonization. Then... I got admission to study in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. At first, I thought, this is the end of my writing career, but I was inspired by my Muse Giver to "write, write, write!" Here I am, one year later, writing. It's been a beautiful journey. It began on Feb 16, with...! TWELVE DAYS TO VALENTINE Read It was Valentine. My sis wanted us to celebrate so she dragged me (literally) to a Valentine Music Special. It was what I needed to breathe life to my Muse. Twelve Days to Valentine was inspired by the university culture which I was still new to. I loved the environment and kep

Back to the story 💓💓💓

Doris winced as she landed on the floor. Her weight rested heavily on her right wrist and her joint smarted harshly.

She rubbed her wrist which had been bound a moment ago and stared at her assaulter fiercely.

He paid no attention as he released the rope from terrified Ella's hands and pushed her as well. Ella landed on her side with a shriek and began to sob, again.

Enraged, Doris sprang up and attacked him, screaming, "How dare you! I'll kill you!"

That was all she said before another man, a dark handsome youth, struck her on her cheek. He checked her further movements by pointing a gun at her.

"Come on, baby. Don't act like that," he said with a sly smile.

Doris rubbed her aching head as she glared at him.

"Bastard," she spat and he laughed.

"You've called me a lot of names during our chats, but bastard has never been a part of the list."

Ella sobbed.

Doris looked at her little sister and said, "You should have left her. She's not involved in this."

"It's as they say, the more the merrier. Don't you agree?" said the dark man sinisterly.

Doris looked at the man that had pushed her. He was wearing a green mask.

Another man joined them. He stood at the doorway of the dimly lit room and beckoned the dark youth. He also wore a mask, a red one. The dark youth was the only one without a mask. He was also the boss for the other two addressed him as Capon.

"Capon," he said, "there's a situation."

"What?"

Doris strained her ears to listen further, but their whispers were indistinct.

After some time, Capon whispered some orders to the green masked man. Doris only made out "7 o' clock sharp." Then Capon and red mask left.

Green mask looked at the two girls; one, bold and defiant, the other, scared and sobbing. He looked at a sheathed dagger at a corner of the room. Doris had already seen the instrument and was terrified. He noticed, then he went to where it lay on a blood spotted table and picked it up. Doris knew that Ella had seen it, because she squealed. The masked man looked menacingly at her and ordered, "Shut up!"

"Leave her alone!" Doris screamed. Enraged, he rushed at the 18 year old beauty and would have slapped her soundly, but the instructions of his boss stopped him. Also, Ella cried, "Please, leave her. Please."

Her innocent sobs kept the man from what he intended to do to Doris.

He left the room with the dagger and a wicked smile on his lips. There was no need to get angry, because at 7pm, the two of them would cease to exist.

Doris crawled on the floor to her sister. Ella was holding her mouth and trying to stifle her sobs, but they continuously choked her.

"Ella, it's enough. Stop it. We have to get out of here," Doris said rather fearfully.

A red candle on a table, the only source of light in the room, was sufficient for Doris to see the ugly expression of weeping on her sister's face. Instead of pity, she felt disgust.

"Did... Will - Will daddy come for us?" Ella stuttered in a tearful whisper.

"I don't know but..." Doris stopped and listened for a second. She resumed in a trembling voice, "Ella, we have to get out of here now."

"What's that noise?" Ella asked and listened. It was the sound of a knife being sharpened. The screech was so clear, it was as if the man was doing his fearful duty right behind the door, to scare them.

"Ella, we have to go," Doris said again in a voice full of tears. Ella was already weeping her tender heart out. She was just 16! She never planned to meet her end this way.

"Ella, we have to go," Doris repeated and tried to search the room for a miraculous exit.

There was only one door, and it was guarded. The window was shut tight by a metal board that had been fixed to the wall. In the room, only a mat and a table could be seen. The tiles around the mat were splattered with blood, just like the table.

Doris shook as she imagined what her fate held for her in a matter of minutes.

With a sharp move, she seized Ella's hand and peered at her silver faced watch. Ella peered as well.

"6:51," Doris mumbled. She collapsed weakly on the spot beside her sister. The last of her boldness had left her. Her face was livid with fear.

"When are they coming back?" Ella asked in a grave whisper.

Doris hardly met her sister's eyes as she replied, "Soon."

To be continued.
