Once upon a time, in Imperial Russia, there was a king, Nicholas, and a queen, Alexandria. They had four daughters and one son. They were a beautiful family. The children were all known for something unique; beauty, intelligence, quietude. Anastasia was known for mischief. Everyday in the palace was spent getting scolded or playing a trick on her sisters. Despite that, she was a dear child. She was the youngest daughter too.
No doubt, her life would have been a merry adventure with a happy ending. However, it was not to be.
The Bolshevik revolution came and dethroned Nicholas, the kindest of fathers but infamous of leaders.
If only it would end there, but after that, the family were put under house arrest. They applied for asylum to different countries but were denied. Then, the leader of the revolution, who considered the life of the royal family a threat to his government, had them executed.
It was a gruesome event. Not one, not even the young children were spared. That was the end of dear Anastasia. π
Many years later, Anastasia resurrected. ☺️
Yes! She came back to life, in the classic fantasy animation, Anastasia by ~Disney~ 20th Century Fox π¦.
Let me explain. Currently, the movie is a Walt Disney property but as at the time it was released (21st November, 1997), it was a product of 20th Century Fox. That's a win for Disney because when Anastasia was released in movie cinemas, it proved quite a rival for Disney. Fox was obviously trying to get back at Disney for dominating the movie industry for so long.π€¦♀️Can you blame them? As at then, everyone was in love with Little Mermaid. Everyone wanted to watch Beauty and the Beast! Let's not even mention Pocahontas and Aladdin!
What made Anastasia a classic? For those yet to watch it, I'll try and answer this question with as few spoilers as possible.
Firstly, Anastasia is different from our everyday Disney princess. Yes, she gets the love of her life and lives happily ever after (spoiler π€¦♀️) but, she's more of a heroine in her story. In short, Prince Charming doesn't save the day; Anastasia does.
Second, the dead-alive villain, Rasputin keeps us very apprehensive throughout the movie. His extreme hate for the Romanov family and his attempts at murdering the last of the Romanovs (Anastasia) are overwhelming. He's so passionate about this one mission that even his side kick, Bartok the bat advises him to "Get a life." Funny how that statement can be interpreted differently π
What began as the adventure of an 18 year old girl searching for her past ends with her finding what she always needed; family! Someone to love. Someone to look out for you. Someone to feel at home with. π₯Ί
The ending of the movie, Anastasia, is... happy! The movie itself is magical, "though it attracted criticism from some historians for its fantastical retelling of the Grand Duchess," Anastasia.
In conclusion, Don Bluth and Gary Goldman did a fantastic job directing this animation. Also, Susan Gauthier, Bruce Graham, Bob Tzudiker and Noni White no doubt made all writers of screen plays proud with their work.We appreciate them deeply for their fantastic work, for through their hands' work, Anastasia lives on.
