EPISODE 7
Nono smiled as she read through the messages in the group chat. Nearly all the messages were for her. She had been tagged multiple times and her course mates had showered her with approval and commendations for her priceless retaliation towards the "history snobs."
She was proud of herself even though she didn't feel completely happy with her reaction. She would have responded differently but then, she had been blinded by anger.
"They deserve it," she replied her conscience and convinced herself of this with her recollections of History's offenses.
Her course mates' praises kept her happy throughout the week. The following week, they returned to the enemy zone for another class. Nono had told them to stay out of trouble, but this time, it was the history students that ignored them. They had even left half of the chairs free for them to sit. Mass com was overjoyed! They sat at the left of the class while their opponents sat at the right.
It was an uncomfortable change in the class. History was so calm. No teases, no jeers. Even Caleb kept his eyes straight and his mouth shut.
Nono laughed at the change and skipped out of the class after the lecturer left. Like a shepherd, she left after all her sheep had left.
"Hey," a girl called her.
Nono recognized the blue glasses and vanilla hair. She stopped before the history assistant class rep and said, "Hello."
"Can I talk to you?"
"Sure," Nono said in place of "You already are talking to me."
"I look up to you as a leader. I admire how your classmates respect you. It's cool, but you led them wrongly last week. You shouldn't have done that," she said.
Nono was about to react when the girl quickly continued, "Calm down. I don't approve of what my friends did. I know we wronged you. I personally tried to discourage them but then you lost your patience. Here are the consequences of your action. You actually broke our door. Caleb found out in the evening when he wanted to lock the classroom. He was relieved none of us had found out. That evening, he had to call a carpenter. The carpenter charged him extra because it was already late. Caleb paid with his money and told me not to tell the others. He knew what would happen. It would be no different from what happened between our third year seniors. We would be reliving history and spreading the hate which puzzles me to this day."
"I..." Nono began.
"I'm not done yet. Caleb fixed the door with his money. He left school very late. He still had to print a bunch of attendance lists, buy some class equipments and take our term papers to a lecturer's staff quarters. By the time he finished, it was very late. He still had to go home and prepare for a test. It wasn't a simple test and he wasn't smiling after the test. He's not happy and he hasn't been for a long time. He's paying for your actions. He could have had you all reported but he didn't. He didn't."
Nono lowered her eyes. She hoped the girl wouldn't go on. She didn't. "I never knew," Nono said sincerely.
"That's why I'm telling you. I trust you to make it right." With that, the girl entered her class.
When Nono returned to her class, her classmates applauded her.
"Boss, history has been defeated," they cheered.
"025, listen. It's not fair what we did to history," Nono said, stopping their applause.
They grumbled. "Didn't you see what they did to us?" TJ retorted and the others cheered in support. At once, everyone of them began to complain about history.
"Enough!" the boss commanded and slowly, the din of noise died down.
"Listen to me. Before we came to this noble school, we never knew anything about this beef. It doesn't even concern us. 300 level's matter is not ours. Is this what we want, to be fighting with them till we graduate? I don't know about you guys but that's not what my parents paid my fees for. Yes, I'm the one who slammed the door first, but I was wrong. I admit it. I just found out the consequences of my action and I'm not happy with myself. It's true, history is a department of snobs," Nono grimaced as she remembered Caleb, "but who are we? Are we also snobs? No! We are good. We are outstanding both in academics and character. We are Jacksonites!"
"Wooo!" they cheered.
"So, let's go and apologize to History. Who's with me?" Nono said.
"Dey play," Olivia, the class vendor said and everyone hissed in disapproval.
Nono shook her head and heaved a sigh while Redeemed laughed.
After classes, Nono met Caleb at the FASA quadrangle.
"Hi," Nono said.
Caleb ignored her.
"What are you doing here?" she asked.
"Should I remind you why you are here?" Caleb asked angrily.
"Huh?"
"You broke our class door. I believe my assistant told you."
"Maybe. Why didn't you use your class dues to fix it?"
Caleb looked at her. "I believe what you're meant to utter next is an apology." Nono sighed. "Well?" Caleb said anticipatingly.
"Pardon."
"What?"
"I don't use the s word. I'm a gangster. You know, one of those hells angels with bikes. I'm the tough type so..."
Caleb stood up and left.
"I'm not finished," Nono called after him.
"But I am," he replied.
"Wait. I get it. You pick on me because you... You like me, like in the stories on Inkitt. Am I right?"
Some students near her laughed and Nono ran to Caleb. "Caleb. Caleb!"
"Yes, Nono?" Caleb asked as he faced her.
"I'm... I'm sorry," Nono said at last. She resolved to brush her teeth extra hard before bedtime.
Her efforts were worth it. Caleb replied, "I'm sorry as well. I shouldn't have let my friends treat you guys so rudely. It's actually my fault. I listened when our seniors called your class the enemies."
"Great. Wait, what?" π€¨
Caleb chuckled. "You're a good leader, Nono. Don't mind my nagging. You're the real boss," he said.
Nono smiled, not in appreciation but in affirmation π For once, she thought, Caleb was right.
"My secretary told me about the money you gave her, for the door. Thanks," said Caleb. Nono waited for him to add, "but I don't need it."
"I really needed it," Caleb added and Nono sniffled.
"So, we're cool?" Nono asked.
"We're cool," Caleb responded.
"That's my guy," Nono said and gave him a knuckle. Caleb smiled and Nono guessed Redeemed was right when she called him handsome.
"Oh. About liking you, here." Caleb gave her a folded paper. She accepted it and tried not to laugh in his face. To her surprise, he said, "Give it to Redeemed."
Immediately, she frowned, hissed, threw the letter at Caleb and walked away. Caleb laughed.
To be continued.
